Ok, so I was up at one of the lakes today doing photography and the wind was blowing like crazy. As I was walking the shore I found a "like-new" baseball style cap (soaked, of course) with "Mercury" printed on it. I knabbed it and brought it home. I've soaked it twice in Oxy-clean and I just can't get rid of the fishy smell. Is there any way to get rid of the fishy/lake smell or should I just toss it? Thanks.
You could Fabreeze it to death. If that dont work Id soak it in gasoline, Id rather it smeel like gas than fish lol. I think Fabreeze should do pretty well though.
Hot water baking soda AND white vinegar. Soak in hot water and baking soda a few minutes then put some vinegar in. For a gallon of water about 2 heaping TBSP of soda and 1/2 cup vinegar. a little hydrogen peroxide beforehand and nothing left behind for sure. I use this on my Teva's and theres no way it smells as bad as they can get.
You may try soaking it in white gas (coleman lantern fuel) found at any walmarts-- Alot safer than regular gas-- as always try alittle on a non-viewable area.
"If you mix baking soda and vinegar together, you're going to get a real interesting reaction. (from the ingredients)"
Yeah but it isn't dangerous or anything especially diluted w/ water. Supposedly the reaction is what does it, but really I have no idea, I just know it works
Gah! It couldn't be saved. I thought I had the smell out but it was still there. Soaked it some more with baking soda, but it's too far gone. That Oxy-clean faded the heck out of it. I thought it wasn't supposed to do that. Oh well.
That fish smell is the worst and won't ever come out. A good friend of my is a stereo installer. Back in the day he got a nasty customer, he punched a few holes in a tuna can and fastened it up under the dash. About a week later that car was done!

With all that effort you're better off buying a new hat .
