When the truck sets for more than a couple of hours, it takes a couple of start cycles to start. I have checked all the glow plugs with a meter and they are good and the glowplug timing circuit is working, giving the proper on time and cycling at the the end of the initial time-on.
The starter motor is less than 24 hours old. Sometimes the crank speed is slow, or, when I tried to start it this morning, cranking went from slow to stop. I turned the key off and cranked again at full speed! Batteries are new and have been checked. Voltage Reg and Alt were replaced last week.
Ford said to allow them to check the engine for cavitation problems. I change the oil every 3000 miles and it uses no oil and it uses no antifreeze. There is no oil in the antifreeze and no antifreeze in the oil. Sounds like Ford wants to charge me a bundle to get into the engine.. for nothing.
Hi there. I can't see your truck from here. But here is something to check. Please don/t get choked if you did this. Make sure all battery conections are clean and tight. Including the ground. Make sure starter cables is in good shape. Also check the starter end of cable. Make sure it is sound. Not frayed and hanging on buy a thread. This hit and miss thing is suspisious. I no you said new starter. You can't rule out a dud. Sound like maybe the feild coils or armature might be grounding out. Not sure. Need more info. Check these out and repost.
In checking some more on the starter, the starter relay is clicking (new yesterday) but the start solenoid on the starter is NOT clicking. This means that the solenoid must be bad. Yes, a DUD as you called it. I will be taking the starter out this afternoon and getting an exchange. I will let you know. Thanks.
Well, it all boiled down to the starter. The original starter was tested and drew 300amps no load run! I bought a new one. It worked once, still with a little starting problem, and slow like the original. Then it quite totally. No even a click. Took it back and got an exchange on the warrantee. New starter draws 170amps no load. It cranks the engine fast, and it starts within the first second of crank, every time. Speed of crank is everything.
