I have a 351m with 4000 miles on the rebuild and had a wrist pin go, I can get another 351m with good pistons but smokes, my question is: Can I reuse the rings in the rebuilt 351m or is it wise to get new rings ( which I think it is but my brother says to use the rings outta the rebuilt, just hone the cylinders.) I am working on a really tight budget.
if your useing the rings from the rebuilt motor and putting them on the donor piston and reinstalling them in the rebuilt motor then you should be okay. DW
The new rings most likely had 'break-in' sort of feathers on the edges of the ring. They wore off real quickly in the 4k miles, and wore into the surface of your old block's cylinders. If you used them in the 'new-old' block, i.e., the one without the rod/wrist pin grooves in the cylinder wall, they would take a loooooong time to break in. and may never break in properly. If you are on a tight budget, get a set of cheap cast iron rings, and use them until you have more bucks to spend...

Altho I have re-used rings before, I dont advise it.... If you choose to do so, keep each ring set marked as to what cylinder it came out of, and re-install them in that hole. Even then there is a fair chance it will become a smoker in less time than it would with new rings.
I would not re-use them. I know some people that have had OK results re-using Chrome rings. Had to med. hone the bore. I dont know about other materials, and I would not re-use any ring in my engine. I would use a set of cheap, new, rings before I would re-use a set of expensive rings.
