Hi guys! (gals too) I'm not that new to the world of diesels, but most of my experience is just enough to get me into trouble without a manual, and most of that is with GM type stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I have seen the light now! LOL
Question: On a 1983 F-250 6.9 2WD Automatic trans. what besides the usual maintenence do I gotta do? Specifically...do I need to adjust the valves periodically? I already read everything in this group and followed a few hints re the glow plug momentary switch and the removal of the "soup bowl" from the air cleaner. Thanks in advance for any other thoughts
Valves are hydraulics. No adjustin to 'em. Only advise I can give ya for free is to keep a good maintainance program. Warm up times and cool down times after hard work. Dont get nervous over fuel mileage cuz the fuel aint worth crap to start with. Use Stanadyne Performance fuel additive to lube the seals in the injection pump and help lube the internals of the pump too. Lots of guys run single exhaust, some run single 3 inch exhaust and some guys run duals. The better it breathes, the better it will operate. AND "if it aint broke, dont fix it !"
The soup bowl is part of the upper air filter housing and silences the air going into the intake manifold. When the filter housing is in place the soup bowl actually hangs down into the air filter and some say that it restricts the air flow. It can be removed by cutting around the outside since it's just pressed sheet metal.
I just removed mine last week...the engine is a little louder but it's too soon to check for any changes in performance or mileage.
