belt/pulley problem

i'm in the process right now of replacing my alternator. my problem is that the new alternator has 6 ridge pulley while the rest of the serpentine system is an 8 ridge pulley set up. should i try and switch pulleys on the alternators or use a narrower belt? i tried to get the pulley off the old alternator but with no success. any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

try a big impact wrench or strap wrench and a quick blow to the ratchet with a hammer . without the 8 ribs the belt might slip and squeal alot.

First do you have acess to an air impact gun? If so the way I have removed many many many altenator pulleys is to clamp the altenator in a vise and grab your impact gun. Find the right size socket and you can zip the nut right off. Caution: some of these nuts are left hand thread so be careful to turn it the right way.
