hi guys just got this neat old truck BUT I got a good deal on it cause the thing drove the last owner nuts.... its a 91 /6/300ci. with 4 speed ... it runs fine as long as you don't get on it ... but starts to miss as soon as you do ...if you sort of feather the accel and let it catch up it will slowly gain speed. the FO had the plug wires replaced ..did a bunch of stuff like cleaning the fuel lines and so on to no avail ..he thinks its the computer (aint it always ) any way it acts very much like a bad accelerator pump on a carb model or possably no timing advance ...
any ideas (only had it for a few hrs... thought I would ask the experts before I tore into it ...)
Sounds like a fuel problem. I would check your fuel pressure, should be around 35 psi.
Dont over look the fuel diverter valve they can clogg up and cause problems.
former owner swears he checked all that stuff an you can see where some fuel stuff has be replaced ...however bet he didn't check the diverter valve ... I just came back from a test drive in it ... and still find that it acts almost exactlly like a bad accell pump in a carb model ... runs ok a constant speed ..only seems to miss when you press on gas almost like its loading up ... did a lot of reading today about the fuel injection setup on this beast and plan to check the codes tomorrow ...however that has been done already as well ... by someone else . ..thing has lots of miles wonder if the cad converter is stoped up and causeing a rich running condition ... I will most likely run it a bit tomorrow and pull the plugs ..
You will need to remove your o2 sensor and borrow/purchase a pressure gauge and thread it into the bung for the o2 sensor to read how much back pressure you have.
ok so its not the map sensor and I also cleaned the bypass valve (air) no change ..when I check the computer codes I get a 522 on the engine not running test ...thats susposed to mean that the truck is not in park ...but this is a stick shift ... maybe he put in the wrong computer ??? where can I find a number chart for the computer to check ...also the computer shows pass in the running check ... mmmm
next step is to check and see if the timing will advance ...by the way I found out that the former owner had this thing in 2 shops and no one could fix it ... so I am going to figure this out if it kills me cause he thinks he put one over on me I bet ...
Another way you can check your convertor with out using a back pressure gauge, is to unbolt your exhaust before the catylytic convertor and see if there is any improvement.
