Ignition failed so I replaced the lock/tumbler AND the ignition switch that's about a foot down the column from the tumbler. There is a pushrod that connects the ignition switch to a small rack/pinion right off the tumbler. Joining this pushrod and the rack/pinion is a cast aluminum semicircle that's about 1.5 inches in diameter. This part has a couple of extrusions, one of which rides along inside a track to keep the linkage properly aligned. This particular area of the part is what is broken, such that the part will not stay aligned, causing the forward motion toward the pushrod to be lost somewhat, such that the ignition switch cannot be fully depressed to the "start" position.
Anybody know the name and number of this part? My local parts guy says that his source tells him it's discontinued and that I'll have to scarf one from a junkyard. Would rather order one and wait than to have to dig one out of a junker.
Negative. If I understand you right...its a dealer item. Usually in stock. I just had my local dealer hold one for me to pick up tomorrow. $16.80 for the actuator in a 91 w/ tilt. I would imagine yours would be in stock also. Broke mine the other day.
I wouldnt recommend that item form a junker. If the owner didnt relieve the tension on the locking mechanism when he started his vehicle.....that part will be all used up on the donor vehicle also.
Good luck with it.
Looking at my 88 Ford Truck Shop Manual. I believe the part is the "Lock Drive Gear" PN: 3E717. Take the part into Ford and see if they can match it up for you.
Bad thing about getting parts from Junk Yard is they will want you to buy the entire steering column.
When I replace mine, the dealer called it the actuater, it broke again but I machined a new pin for it and it has not broken again in three years. It is the part that locks the gearshift in place. Mine was $10 at the dealer.
I forget what Ford terms it. When mine broke, for the second time, I went to the Ford dealer. I told the parts man I had an 89 F150 with a tilt column and needed the horseshoe-looking thing that connected to the ignition that.....upon which he spun around grabbed one off the wall and slung it on the counter before I finished. I noticed he had at least 10 more in stock. That's how commonly these things fail. Perhaps you need to check around a bit more?
Same as GypsyR, I just refer to it as the hooked piece in a tilt steering column in ANY ford dealership, and they usually have the piece in your hand before you can blink.
Also, you can get a print out, if required, of how the pieces in the steering column from a dealer.
Cost is about $13.00 CDN.
I agree, junk yards will see you the whole column, and who has the time to remove this piece from a junker wheel, THEN put the junker piece into your column?
Just go to a dealer and buy new for cheaper.
