LAST EDITED ON 07-Oct-01 AT 01:33 PM (EST)[p]I have a 2000 PSD, F350, 3:73 gears, 4x4, automatic transmission, crew cab long-bed, 20k miles on a bone stock truck no mod’s. I have spoken with owners getting excellent fuel economy with their PSD’s. I receive 12 to 13 mpg around town, on the highway if I run 70mph or less (Less than 2k on the tachometer), my mileage increases to 17mpg. Over 70mph the mileage drops to 15 or so. I have riden in 2 other SuperDuty's that get 17+ around town 19+ on the open road. (I don't buy the story that automatic trany's produce a non-efficient transfer of energy creating the poor fuel economy) Any help with how I can increase my fuel economy or what you have done to increase your mileage would be greatly appreciated. The Ford dealer is of no help, "Saying some get better mileage then others."
Please advise.... Thx, Jeff
For some reason some DO get better mileage than others, why, I don't know. You could try an aftermarket highflow air filter and/or larger exhaust or just remove the muffler and srtaight pipe it. I get 18mpg in mixed city/freeway driving. 99 F250 SD SC shortbed 6spd all stock except for the air filter.
I had the same problem with my superduty two drive machine. I took the advice of my mechanic and chipped it with a Diablo chip. The gas mileage went from 15 mixed to 17 - 19 average. The chip makes the tranny shift smoother I think.
I have two of these trucks both 2001 that I purchased 4 months apart. They do get different mileage. However the chip in both has made them pretty even.
I did a complete modifcation on the one and have left the other stock. The one that is stock tends to bog down a little of you run it hard. However the temps are within 100 degrees of each other on the EGT gauge.
I do not run the one with the stock hard though. It was done more the mileage on the highway.
Not sure if this will have any value but I just finished a short trip to PA from NC and on the way up I averaged 17.22mpg running about 75/80mph and the way back I averged 17.78mpg also 75/80mph (both legs had various around town driving)
Truck: 01' 2wd/CC/LB 3.73
This is slighlty up from when the truck was new. (its still new w/ 5400 miles on it)
I have a 2001, PSD, 373 gear, short bed, exteded cab and pulled a 30 foot 5th wheel from Michigan to Tennessee, I got 15.5 MPG running around 65-70MPH. I thought that this was good. Truck is all stock with 7,000 miles.
