I'm writing this because I"m not sure which spark plugs to put in my 98 4.6L - I had replaced them a couple years ago with AWSF 32PP double platinum plugs, and now the dealer tells me they've been superceeded by another plug which is only a single platinum and that they don't even list a double platinum anymore. I've also heard about how the spark goes from the center electrode to the ground electrode on half the cylinders, and from the ground to center on the other half, this way on a single platinum half the plugs would wear out sooner? If anyone would care to educate me on this and what plug I should look for that would be great. I'm just trying to clear the air on some of this and whether I should find a double platinum or stick with the single platinum plugs etc. And if a motorcraft double platinum is availible (which I'm sure there has to be) what would be the current part number? (stock heat range also) Any info would be great! Thanks!
I have heard the opposite on these newer engines. Everything that I have read says that the Motorcraft double platinums do better in the modular engines.
I've been doing some research, and the autolite double platinum plugs look identical to the motorcraft ones in about every way, electrode size, heat range, everything. I even read on the autolite website that they have been helping Ford design their plugs. They've been around in the business and I find that they are one manufacturer that doesn't buy into all the gimmicks, just a good surefire spark plug - and since they seem to be identical to the ford ones, in fact if they don't make the motorcraft plugs they design them - so I'll probably stick with the autolite double platinum. (APP104) I'll let you know how it comes out.

I have often though that myself. I have read on this site several times about the Motorcrafts being better in the modular engines. I can't say personally because my truck only has 38,000 miles on it and I am not going to change them until about 80,000 miles. I sure ain't looking forward to it either!!
It is the way that it is designed. I am pretty sure that it is because the block is cast then the cylinder liners are pressed into the block. It is called modular because it is not cast as 1 unit.
I know that LxMan1 will not agree with using this plug, but I run the 32c in my truck with stock timing, truck runs awesome, and I run a AWSF12C plug in my blown tbird 4.6.
I'm sure that it runs fine, but the 4.6L/5.4L in a truck is a bear to change plugs in, especially the 4x4's, so most of us prefer to run a plug that will last longer without having to change them.
