92 Exploder , 161,000 miles, 4x4 - makes a cracking sound in the front end when turning at low speeds. Especially does it when backing up. I'm thinking the ball joints are dry? Nothing in the front is loose, drives great too. Would just like to know what the noise is and if I should be worrying about it...
Check your stabilizer tie rods in the front. One or both may be broken. They should be replaced in pairs if one is broken. Had the same problem on my 96.
This is a safety hazard if it is broken. It will make a rollover all that more likely to occur.
Can you better describe the noise? Two common causes of front end noises on the '92 are the auto hubs (assuming you still have the auto hubs and haven't already switched to manual hubs) or radius arm bushings. Because it occurs while turning, I would first suspect the auto hubs. Does the sound go away if you get the hubs locked or on slow turns in 4H (if you try it in 4H, be sure to test on a loose surface)?
