Steering Box Started Creaking

1997 F250 7.3PS 4x4

With the engine off - when I turn the steering left or right a loud creaking sound comes from what seems to be within the steering box.

I can't see any movement or cracks in the frame. Could the noise actually be coming from within the steering box itself?

Check your ball joints & tie rods. Grease them up.

Feb/25/2011: I greased the tie-rod ends and upper ball joints but noticed that the lower ball joints are still original - no grease nipple...

Could the lower ball joints be rusty and/or seizing up inside? I noticed that the steering is becoming tight and it doesn't track back to center well, after turning a corner.

Any other Ideas?

If I remember right, the lower ball joints are pressed in. I assume need heat and a pickle fork to get them out and a press to get them back in...?

Thanks guys!

support the front end on jack stands and put a big pry bar under the tire and pry up and see if there is any movement on the ball joints.

You can aslo try taking off the tie rod end on each side with the wheel raised and see if it will turn smoothly by hand, if you have a frozen joint I think you will feel it.
