Exclamation Help.......428 ID Problem...

I have a motor that is suppose to be a 428.....I have dropped the tranny, and searched all over the block for a ID#. I have found only one set of numbers....between the tranny and block. That number is 352 34 ....
Is this the number I need or what am I looking for?
Please help....

C or A

Is there aa C or A cast on the back of the block. What are the # by the oil filter pad? Also pull the # 1 and # 4 spark plugs and use a piece of wire to measure the diferance with #1 at TDC 3.98 = 410 or 428. 3.78 + 390,406 or 427. What are the # on the heads? Tim R.

The quickest ways to tell if you have a 428 block is to look just inside the center freeze plug openning on the side of the block. You will see a *428* cast inside of the block.

Casting #s to look for are C6ME-A and C7ME-A which are 428-4V and police interceptor blocks. The 428 Cobra Jets were C7ME-A and C. Not all of the blocks have casting #s.

There might be a few more #s, but that is what I can remember right now.

Hope this helps.

This thread is NOT 67-72 related.

It is an engine ID thread & will be moved to the FE engine forum.

Sure it is, sounds like a no-number 1969 CJ block cast on June 2.

They can help you out more after this thread gets hijacked, err, moved.

Question i am so confused

I never knew trying to id a motor could be so hard.. the number is here... no the number is there. no wait there is no number. Man just give me a 350. I know them like the back of my hand. I can just listen to a 350 and tell you exactly whats wrong with it... agguh. so basically i won't be able to tell what the motor is unless i get inside. Right???

Well even if you do see 428 cast inside the block that still doesnt mean you have a 428. Welcome to the world of FE's . {Sometimes I think this is the only forum where we still arent sure what motors we are workin with , but we're still makin progress } The only positive way to id it is measure the stroke which is pretty easy just do what rogue427 said. Then after that if it has a 3.98 stroke you can worry about it being a CJ,SCJ,PI,etc. These engines can get your hopes up real fast sometimes so this is why just about every one in here says measure em. Oh btw 350's are outta the question, now you get to play with real motors.

Pull the oil pan, find the number cast into the counter weight on the crank.
1u is a 428. 2a is a 390. If you find a different number post it and someone will ID it.

Say since you got the tranny off check out the flexplate for a tack-welded weight near the ring gear, that'll tell you what crank you have in there.
