88 e150 302 won't start

This van has been stalling upon startup for awhile. It sat for 2 weeks and now won't start. After charging battery it cranks very fast but won't pop. I've verified that it has spark so I suspect the fuel filter. With dual tanks that means two fuel pumps right? They both wouldn't go bad at the same time but it won't start using either tank. I can't find the fuel filter. Any help on where the filter is?

From reading the forum I see that the manual tank switch can go bad somehow. If it's not the filter where do I go to hook up one tank directly???

Thanks

Welcome to the FTE site! I don't think there is anything else quite like it on the web. Actually I think you have 3 pumps. You have two low pressure pumps, one in each tank, and one high pressure pump. That pump, and the filter, is located on the drivers side frame rail...........on the inside of the rail just about under the drivers seat. No matter what it's probably time for a filter change, so go ahead and do that. Can you smell fuel when you're trying to start it? Are you getting ignition spark? Have you checked for any codes? When my '87 started doing what yours is doing it was a fuel filter problem. The next thing to stop it "dead" was a computer control module located at the base of the distributor. There is also a fuel pump relay that controls the pumps and you could have a problem there. My relays were located on the inside right fender wall, and lokked like little green boxes. Best of luck.....mike

Thanks guys... I checked spark by pulling a wire off and putting an old plug in and then cranking the engine. That looks good. I suspect the filter because I had it started and it abruptly died. It used to die after first starting but then start right up again. It used to run and then gradually die after putting it in gear. This time after starting I had high idle and then a very sudden kill. I don't smell fuel after some serious cranking. Haven't checked for codes yet.

I'll check the filter once I find it. Then take a look at the fuel pump relay. How do I check the relay?
