I bought a '00 XLT 2WD entended cab with just under 30K miles on it. I believe that the previous owner used it to pull a 5th wheel trailer. I think that the shocks need to be replaced because small bumps and uneven pavement cause a lot of shaking.
Excuse my ignorance, but is there a way to test the shocks? What else could be causing such a loose suspension?
I have seen some posts on what shocks to buy, but I didn't see answers to this question. I would appreciate any advice.
Excessive bouncing is usually the signal. Usually the front shocks will fade first and you will notice the front end bouncing several times over bumps. Go to each corner of the truck and push down hard and release. The truck should pop up and stop. If it keeps moving then the shocks are worn.
I use the Heavy Duty Monroe Gas shocks up front. My rear shocks are still stock at 90K.
Ultramagdan's test is good - on a truck you might have to step on the bumper with your whole weight to get a good test. If it bounces more than once the shocks aren't doing their job. In any case, if you replace the 4 year old stock shocks with just about any aftermarket shock you will enjoy the improvement.
Personally, I will not run OEM shocks past 30k. I have found that at that point after I change shocks it feels like a new truck. I am always amazed at the difference. As to brand, I will probably use Bilsteins on mine, as I did on a previous vehicle.
The best test is the one you already did-the shaking is a good sign to replace. I also completely agree w/ everything Kingfish51 said. even if they have some rebound left, it doesn't mean their good. Shocks affect so many areas of the truck it's hard to justify not replacing them w/ some good ones. If they keep you out of one collision they've paid for themselves.
