Help NO gas ,no Start

Im Not A Ford Man So bare with me
1988 Ford E150(one of them coach Models) 302 which is not original but believe it to be between 92 -96 EFI FUEL INJECTION AND TFI AND TFI IGNITION SYSTEM
Was told van ran out of gas (not sure if i believe that) if i dump gas in to the intake it will start right up and run fine. i notice their is no gas in fuel rail,
I have taken the fuel pump off and hooked it to battery and it will run and pump gas, blew out fuel filter which was also full with gas, I also do not hear the fuel pump when the key is on. I also changed the Ignition Module on the Distibutor.
Still wont cacth the fuel also checked that safty swicth thing under the dash on passenger side. and jump the wires and tried. still no luck. The only improvement I believe i may have made is when i let it run by dumping in the fuel in intake, is that after it stalls a little bit of air pressure will come out the bleeder valve on the fuel rail. When I depress the valve stem of couse. Hope some one can help cause im ready to give up

Didn't see you mention the fuel pump relay. That would be my first guess.

You said you took the pump off and checked it. Was that the pump out of the tank?

I don't know when the switch was made, but Ford used two systems. Early versions have a low-preasure pump in the fuel tank, and a hi-preasure pump on the vehicles frame. Later models have a single hi-preasure pump in the tank.

General observations:
No fuel at the rail with a good fuel pump/s can be caused by the safety shut off switch, fuel pump relay, wiring problems, computer problems, clogged fuel filter (dual pump versions may have two filters), damaged fuel lines, or insufficient fuel in the tank.

There may be other possibilities. The most common failure is the fuel pump relay or the pump itself.

How much gas is in the tank? At least 2 gallons? My car "ran out of gas" once with a gallon left in the tank...

Additional point to keep in mind. Most fuel pumps fail when the engine is shut off. The pump in the tank is cooled by the gas in the tank, and the flow of gas through the pump. Turn the key off and the pump overheats and fails to restart. Letting the tank run nearly empty is bad for the pump.

It is the fuel pump on the frame as i said i took it off and tested seems too work fine
I believe the relay you mention is the one under the dash whith the big red button i even jump the wires on the safety swicth. and still nothin fuel seems to be making it to the fuel pump and filter both were filled with gas and theres more tan 5 gallonsd of gas in one tank.as far as the computer wouldnt that be the ignition module on the distibutor far as i can see , i cant find any other computers

1: If you have a pump on the frame then you also have a pump in the fuel tank.
2: The relay is NOT the safety switch. It does not have a button on it. It will be a small black box with several wires going to it. Normally 4 wires, but it could be a little different.
3: Do you have dual tanks? That would be an aditional complication. If the tank switch isn't working properly.
4: The computer is under the dash (I think). The tfi module is a seperate thing.

There a component lookup at www.autozone.com that should help you find the relay.

It's probably the relay or the pump in the tank. If you can, check to see if your getting power to the pumps. If not, then it's the relay. If you are getting power to the pumps, then the pump in the gas tank is bad.

I found it.

On your 1988 FORD TRUCK E150 1/2 TON VAN, the RELAY is:

UNDER HOOD, PASSENGER SIDE, FRONT ENGINE AREA, REAR
OF HEADLIGHT HOUSING, MOUNTED ON UPPER FENDERWELL

On your 1988 FORD TRUCK E150 1/2 TON VAN, the FUEL PUMP is:

UNDER VEHICLE, CENTER, BELOW SEATING AREA, MOUNTED IN
FUEL TANK

They also list two parts for the fuel pump, one in-tank, and one externally mounted.

All Ford efi vehicles have a pump in the tank. If your manual doesn't mention it then you need a better manual.

Good luck.
