Even after a few months I'm very much a novice at these 6.0's. Mine is quiet at idle, crack the throttle little RPM change and the diesel noise goes up. Is that the pilot injector? A guy at my work came in today with a '04 CC-FWD. We looked at his build date and it was 9-22-03 (must have sat on the lot a while). It had a dealer tag under the hood showing a PCM change on 5-14-04 and the truck is a lot noiser than mine or his brothers. Is that because the Pilot Injector is defeated??? and does that change anything but the noise??? If that's it, I sure don't want a flash; mine is great after 2100 mile no complaints. Thanks for any responses

From my recent experience with Ford, I would say that you have pilot injection and your friend no longer does.
Here is what I think happended based on the data from flatratetech.com.
2003 engine model year:
PI was turned off with RC6 in October of 2003.
Transmission braking was softened with RC8 in December.
2004 engine model year:
PI was turned off with RC1 in Feb of 2004.
Transmission bracking was softened at the same time.
Been following this issue with PI. My truck was built 04/16/04. It's a _lot_ more noisy than I expected at idle. Mine also gets even louder with small input to the throtle. Is my PI turned off also?
