fuel pump boost

I hope someone can answer my question cause it is a general question refering to a diesel engine. A mechanic was telling me about a problem he encountered on an older model ford. This truck was prabably about a two ton flatbed. The problem was the fuel pump boost. He said there is a tube coming off the intake manifold and hooking to the fuel pump. It had gotten clogged and the engine lacked power. I have looked in many books and on the internet and found no explanation of this, so can someone please explain how fuel pump boost pressure works, cause I have no clue. Thanks!!!!!

I just remembered, the mechanic also said that on that perticular model or engine, the fuel pump was very large, larger than a typical diesel fuel pump.
