changing oil

I ordered my manual for my new '69 today. Until it gets here, can anyone give me a 2 minute drill on how to change the oil? Thanks a bunch!

Put the truck up on stands. (Do NOT leave it supported by just the jack and do NOT use concrete blocks to support it, unless you have plenty of life insurance for those you will leave behind.) Loosen the oil filler cap on the valve cover. Place an oil drain pan under the oil pan and loosen the drain plug. Remove the drain plug and go have something to drink while the oil drains. When the oil is done draining replace the drain plug about 1/4-1/2 turn past snug. Move the drain pan under the filter and remove the filter using a filter wrench. Personally, I like to use a strap wrench. While the oil is draining from the filter, clean up the oil that spilled while draining it from the pan. Replace the filter about 1/4-1/2 turn past snug. (You DID remember to wipe some fresh oil onto the filter gasket, didn't you?) Lower the truck back down and put in fresh oil up to the appropriate mark on the dipstick. Replace the oil filler cap on the valve cover and you're done.

Make sure the gasket of the oil filter (rubber flat o-ring) comes off with the filter and wipe the mating surface clean. When changing oil on vehicles I like to leave the hood open and the bottles of oil under the hood so I can not miss them in case I get an urge to start the vehicle and close the hood.

My question: what on earth do you guys do with the used oil? Take it somewhere, put in in your trash, flush it, poor it in your backyard, etc...

Yes, I know my suggestions are ridiculous, it's my attempt at humor. But seriously, how do you dispose of it? It seems that in todays tree-huggin' hippie world it would be a pain and/or costly to change your own vs. having the clowns at Jiffy/Quickie/Zippie Lube do the job. Thoughts?

Use cat litter to soak up spills.

Put a little oil on the O ring of the filter before you install it.

Take the used oil to the shop that sold you the oil. Most shops that sell oil, will recycle. Many gas stations will also take used oil. Many local dumps/landfills will also recycle. Some cities will take used oil in a clear container(Milk jugs work).

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Actually the town where I live has a place to get rid of used oil and anti-freeze. Just take it down and dump it in the tanks. I have some old gas cans I store it in and take it every 3 or 4 changes.

One thing was left out. You can't just drain it all out, change the filter, and then fill the engine to the appropriate mark on the dipstick. This is inaccurate because the engine has not run yet and you will be low on oil after startup. The manual will tell you how much oil to put in, make sure you find out how much oil belongs there including the filter which is usually an extra quart. Like my manual says 5 qts plus 1 for the filter, so 6. If I put 5 in and havn't started it yet, the dipstick will say its full, but it's really not. Ya got to start the engine first, let it run for a minute and then shut it off, check dipstick, and add accordingly (for me is 1 extra qt for filter).

When the engine runs after the change, it fills all the little gaps and spaces with oil, as well as the filter, which will all together wipe out a qt of oil after start-up. You'll be missing that qt you thought you had when you read the dipstick before running the engine

we usually put ours up on stands when changing the oil. even if its a pickup. just seems easier to manuver when its in the air.

as for the disposal question....we dump ours in a big 55 gal. drum. from there im not too sure where it goes. its my grandpa's farm so he does that. i think he takes it to the local implement garage and they dispose of it properly.

A guy comes and picks it up. Free. He will come when I get 50 gallons. I dont trust the quick lube clowns with my stuff. When The oil is coming out of hoses, I have no idea what it is. I dont care what the sign out front says it is. Also most of them use cheap filters.

Huh... so does he give you an empty drum when he picks up your full one? Is it a service or just some guy?

Since I use Mobil1, My Jiffy/Quickie place poors it right from the bottle - I guess not enough people use it to justify pumping it via drum. I hear 'ya on not knowing what is coming out of that tube!
