I have been seeing alot of people recommend getting away from the 360, and building a 390. I just put my 360 back together. Did I make a mistake by not taking it on up to a 390?
I bought the Edelbrock Performer intake and 600 carb, Hedman Headers, Pertronix Flame thrower coil and the point conversion kit. Will be happy with this, or kick myself from now on? I not building a hot rod, however I do want it to run strong, and for a long time.
I know, why start small and build big, start big and build bigger.
That 360 will do the job for years to come. With the simple upgrades you have done it will perform much better than the original.
My old 352 is no barn stormer, but it runs great for 125,000 miles. It will get out of it's own way if need be and pulls a load fine. (now the 428 in my '69 is another story ).
Shane, you did not make a mistake. The 360 has its place and is a fine engine. Besides, half the people who tell you they have a 390 in their truck really has a 360 anyways. Since your priorities are a strong, lasting engine rather than a hot rod it sounds like your right on target.
Thanks for easing my mind. I thought I just sank close to $2,000 in an engine that would just be a disappointment. Its been alot fun so far, and this forum has been a big help.
I ran a 360 in my first and favorite FE powered truck. It ran plenty fast. you can still get a lot of power from a 360 wit hall the same add-ons you aould use for a 390. The power will jsut come a little later in the power-band.
I swear that 360 in my 68 was a 428 in disguise :-) Of course I was 16-20 years old when I had that truck. Any faster and I'd have been in jail or dead.
I am really hoping I have not made any mistakes. I question things I have done, but you can't just go back and take everything back apart every time you have a doubt. This is my first rebuild, hopefully next time I will be more confident. One thing about it, since I kept it a 360, I can alway upgrade!
Shaneb75: See 360 390 410 on this sight....don't kill me for mentioning your situation to a fellow contemplating the question. Maybe you can ease his mind.
