Looking for some feedback about both the 5.4 and the 6.8 v10. I really only need the v8 but I've heard the gas mileage is no worse (or maybe better) with the v10. I'm looking to order an 04 f-250 CC 6 3/4' 4x4 in the next month or so.
Let me know what you guys think.
I love my 5.4L. Same as what you're looking to order. I've had it almost 3 weeks and have been at the pumps a few times already i've rolled 1200 miles so far. I'm getting a little over 300 miles on a tank. I haven't figured it exact but I'm guestimating that's about 13 mpg. I've made note of the miles and fuel info with every fill up. I'll figure it up and post the exact mpg's. The trucks been great, I have not a single complaint - I haven't done any hauling, but I've run it on the beach and it handled the sand with no problem at all.
I've had my 03 F250 CC XLT 5.4L for about 9 months and 22,000 miles and have no complaints. I've done basic mods Exhaust, Programmer, and K&N FIPK. Hope this helps.
There is no simple answer from us, really. It all depends on what you are going to do with the truck. An F250 with a 5.4 and no heavy towing/hauling is a very good combo. You will get better MPG with the 5.4, but only with smaller loads. When you start loading the truck the lack of power will surface and there is the difference between the 5.4 and 6.8.
Know for sure what your limits will be before purchasing the truck - that is my advice - then go from there.
I would get the 6.8L, you'll probably kick yourself the first time you need power and say "I could have had a V-10" Seriously though, I had an expedition with the 5.4 and it was adequate (but I did want more power towing my boat), I now have an SD with the V-10 and if I ever buy another S,D it will have a V-10 as well. I cant tell much of a diff. in gas milage between the expy and SD, they both suck and were within 1 mpg of each other.
I love my V10. The gas mileage is about the same as my friend's 5.4 For the price I feel it's worth it to have the extra punch when you need it. My truck is only a month old with a little over 2000 miles on the odometer. I took it on an 800 mile highway trip last week and averaged around 14 mpg. Considering that the I'm still in the break-in period, I was pleased. The V!) has a great track record and is a lot less expensive to purchase and maintain compared to the PSD. For what it's worth, I vote for the V10!

Might as well get the V10...
Might as well get the PSD...
Might as well get an F350 dually...
Get what you want/need. Most people here will recommend what they drive. Nothing wrong with that. Drive each one and see what you want and figure out what your needs are. If you plan on doing any heavy towing I would steer away from the 5.4, but it is good for light to moderate towing.
So, now that Johnsdiesel has spoken, I guess no other responses are necessary.
I'm just trying to say that in the end he should get what he needs/wants. A lot of guys on here will always try and sell someone on an upgrade who isn't interested or doesn't need it. The 5.4L V8 has it's place in the Super Duty lineup and is a viable option, despite what some people think.
I have a 2000 F-250 with a 5.4 and have been very pleased with it's performance. One thing to think about is what you will be using it for now and in future. I have hauled several things with mine and I will say that sometimes I wish I had a bit more power, overall though If you don't plan on hauling very often I think you would be pleased with the 5.4
I have watched fuel mileage on my V10 very closely and consistantly get 15+ mpg on trips. Driven hard it'll drop into the 12-13's but steady cruise at 65-70mph nets 15.2-15.6 regularly. After trucks with 460's and GM's with 454's, I'm happy with this V10 and have more power then before. I run the V10 6 speed 4.30 geared with 315's Super Cab short box and Leer cap. Weighs 6800#'s. Towing 5500#'s nets 9 mpg running the mountains of BC.

I agree completely.
My 5.4 has no problems at all. Even with a moderate load I can cruise at 80 mph no problem. it will out run my old 300 6 powred f150 any day, and it is moving almost 2000 more pounds empty. (while the 300 seems like it had a tad more low end)
HI 1st time poster. I own 2003 reg cab & 2004 supercab both with v10s. I tow landscape trailer & plow with both. I think all the post are correct. I would test drive the same truck with both motors. Even if you need to go to defferent dealers to do so. My wife & I did thats why we went V10. Its all up to you. If I didnt WORK my truck id go smaller. You could get buy the V10 baget for your EGO. Just kidding Go luck You love your SUPERDUTY. Brian.
I have a 03 V10 my partner at the FD has a 02 5.4. both trucks are equiped with the same basic packages. I adverage 12-13 (heavy foot) he runs aprox 1 mpg better. I tow a fifth wheel and went with the V10 for the tow cap. You will not be unhappy with the 5.4 or the 6.8.
