About two months ago, I put a new set of brake pads in my wife's 01 Explorer Sport. Soon after, the brakes started to squeal when you would stop. I figured that it was due to the type of pas I put in (Raybestos), so I went back to the Ford dealer and bought and OEM set of brakes. SAME PROBLEM! At the time, I did not turn the rotors, since they wre not warped and very smooth. It was recommended that I turn the rotors since that was possibly causing the pads to glaze and cauing my sqeaking issue. So...... I pulled the rotors to get then turned. Ended up that the rotors were right at spec and could not be turned. I bought a new set of rotors from Napa at the tune of $90. After about a day, they are doing the same thing again. The sqeal like crazy and are driving me nuts.
Any suggestions? Is there a different type of pad that will solve the problem? I have done dozens of brake jobs on cars and have never had issues like this.
Let me get this straight. You replaced the pads without cutting the rotors, then replaced rotors and put the same pads on? If so, the pads may be glazed. Try changing pads again. I just did a second brake job on my Explorer using raybestos gold pads and cut raybestos rotors and I don't hear a peep out of them. As far as I know the rotors should be cut or replaced every time you replace the pads, but I might be wrong. Let us know.
Yes, I initially replaced the pads and did not turn the rotors. They were not warped and were perfectly smooth. I've just changed pads and not done the rotors dozens of times and never had an issue. I put the 2nd set of pads on and only ran for a few days, then they started queaking, so I swapped the rotors and kept the same pads. No way I am going to pay another $55 for pads after only 3 days of use(100 miles). Yes, I think they are glazing. Just not completely sure why or how to correct. I think I will look at lubing the slides tomorrow night and give that a try. maybe they are hanging up a little and that is causing the issue.
2001 Explorer Sport Trac w/ horrible squeal at light brake depressions.
I had a brake job done at the dealer that included NEW rotors and Ford OEM pads. Horrible brake squeal persisted. I tried the orange "disc brake quiet" goo, that is applied to the back of the pads. No difference, squeal persisted. I thought it might be the pad clips, so I goo'd them down too. No difference.
Finally I went to Sears and bought a set of Wagner Thermo Quiet pads. Squeal is Gone!! These things work. And now I can finally get back to braking normally. I think I was modifying my driving to avoid the squeal! In the interest of full disclosure, I think
the OEM pads felt like they had more stopping power, but I'm ecstatic over the change.
I had the same problem with the front brakes on my 99 Mountaineer, I do however turn the rotors each time I do a brake job on the fronts, because it seems like they tend to pulse after driving a couple of thousand miles if I don't. This last time I bought "Ceramix" pads from NAPA that have ceramic material mixed in and not only do they no longer squeek, but the dust they emit is white, not black, and is light enough to blow away in the wind.
I'm having the same problem with my 99 Explorer Sport, everyone thinks I need new pads but they're brand new and I know what I'm doing.
Hawkhead pads are next on my list. Thats Hawkhead not Hawkshead, I have a set on my 02 Lightning and they are awesome! Now the truck stops as good as it goes.
WOW! I am having the same problem with the rear pads on my 99 Mountaineer i replaced with new rotors, and new ceramic brake pads and when the pads get a little hot after about 30 minutes of driving i occassionally get a little squeel coming from the LEFT REAR side, i dont know why that is doing that because everything is brand new! I put the anti-squeel stuff on the pads and did everything correctly, any suggestions??? Im stunned at this point!
