i was taking the hub off my 1992 explorer and broke the thrust bearing. I called ford and they do not make a bearing and said i would have to pay $500 for a new automatic hub. This washer is made out of nylon so it does not wear. Anyone have a cheaper alternative?
Which bearing is that? I've never had the hub apart but is it something inside the hub? If it's like my 91 with that cast aluminum hub unit that drives off the lug bolts in the rotor... then I would just find one in a salvage yard and replace the whole unit... has to be less than $500. The only other bearing I can think of is the wheel bearing in the rotor itself and those you can buy anywehere.
The washer is in the hub. It it is between the thrust bearing and thrust washer. the bearing is what lock it into 4X4 and the washer is made out a nylon so it can take wear from the hub cover and the bearing.
Like I said, I've never had those apart... but I would think you could find the whole hub unit at just about any salvage yard for $50-$100 bucks or so. You can use Bronco 2 auto locks or manuals too I believe... and I know warn and milemarker make a manual hub conversion kit... they are both much stronger than the stock hubs. As far as finding the stock bearing, have you tried taking it to a local bearing supplier and seeing if they could match it up? If the numbers on the race are legible they may be able to find an exact replacement. I just had to do that on an odd set of wheel bearings that went out on a boat trailer... The bearings were $50 for the set, but it sure beat having to cut off the axle stubs and weld in new ones that used a more common bearing size. If you have a local fastenal or grainger that might be a good place to start, just check your local phone book.
