strapping woes

i have a 10.5 ton hoist strap i use (used) to ****** folks out of the mud! well recently i had one of the ends let loose (it was frayed pretty bad) and i was curious if there was a way to repair it! i would like to put it back in commission cause chains make me very nervous even just pulling!

I have looked all over pirate and have scoured every post that has strap in it (yes even the posts that include strap on, lol) and have come up with very little info!

Here in OK, There is a company that makes/repairs nylon straps, they advertise as a Wire rope (cable) company. You may have one local, if not (Holloway Wire rope Services 918-582-1807)

Yes, it can be fixed.

As a matter of fact, I just got mine back about an hour ago. There's a company in Appleton, WI called L&M Cargo Control (***argocontrol.com)(920-851-5845). They go to all the swap meets in WI and sell/repair nylon straps, tie downs, and all related stuff.

My strap was broken in two right in the middle, and she guarantied me that she could repair it and that the splice would be stronger than the rest of the strap.

My cousin had her fix the loops on two of his straps and he's used them to pull me out several times, so I can vouch for their work.

She quoted me a whole $7.00 for the repair, but when it came today, the note inside said "Reimburse me for shipping. If you need a new one or know of anyone that does, give 'em my card." Shipping was $5.00.

Hope this helps.

Wow, I didn't even know they could put a splice in the middle of a yank strap like that. Having dealt with chain and cable for so many years its still hard for me to trust nylon

yeah, I am used to metal myself....but with the AmSteel and a couple of 10.5 ton HOISTING straps how can I go wrong? I believe that a strap like that would cost mucho dollaros so i think if i can get it patched up for under $20 it would be worth it!

I didn't know you could repair them in the middle either. I kept telling the lady at the swap meet "you don't understand... it's completely broken in two." But she assured me she could fix it, and she did. We're heading up to the trails this weekend and I'll most likely need to test mine out. Hope is works.

Straps are pretty expensive, but Northern Tool has some good prices:
15,000 lb - $20
18,000 lb - $35
27,000 lb - $60
39,000 lb - $70

A store by me has a 6"x25' (I think 50,000 lb) for $100.

Good straps seem expensive considering how little you use them. But they're absolutely priceless when you NEED them. So it's worth the investment.

hmmmmm, a 19+ ton pull strap for $70 would be worth looking into! only thing is I like my strap cause it has been OSHA certified for hoisting and that's where I would like to throw all my marbles....into a hoisting strap!

Hoisting straps have a higher breaking strength, which is good, but do they stretch and recoil like a ****** strap? I was under the impression that they didn't, and that they'd snap from the shock despite the greater strength. Could be wrong though.

What I'd like to get my hands on are those HUGE ropes they use to tie barges together on the Mississippi. They have to be over 2" in diameter. If they can hold a few hundred tons of steel together, they should pull my truck out of a mud hole.

no they don't stretch and aren't rated for shock loads but they insanely high breaking strength would be more than enough to yank a truck out of the mud. if you find a good deal one of them ropes....let me know i am with ya on that!

check with your local heli logging company. they have to replace thier ropes every so often. i heard that some will give you the rope just to get it out of thier yards. some big *** rope. i do believe they are cotton or something, i think because nylon reacts to uv light.

I've heard of guys using old fire hose for straps, too. Heck, if Bruce Willis can jump off a building with one tied to his waste, I'm sure they'd pull a truck out of a mud hole - hehe.
