i wouldn't use old fire hose to much, used to use the old ones from my station all the time, but i started to have to carry several rolls because i used to break them alot.
A local hardware store used to sell a big honkin recovery ropes, as I recall they were very expensive. I have seen one of those big marine ropes used as a strap and it worked just the same-stretch and ******. BUTTHEAD- "Uhhh-huh-huh-huh-you said ******" BEAVIS- " yeah-huh-huh"
I used my REPAIRED strap several times this weekend and it performed like a new one. No problems at all. One time, my tie rod was hooked on a stump and it took 6-8 good jerks to get me out. Put a 6" kink in the tie rod, but I got out and the strap held. Best $5 I ever spent.
What they did was overlap the two pieces by 12", wrap it with a heavy canvas sleeve and sew it.
Yes, they repair the loops too. Infact, that's the most common repair they do. I've seen the loop repairs and they're a lot stronger than the original loops.
Just an update.

That's what the HiLift is made for! Are yo saying your tie rod is only worth $5?

No, the strap repair was only $5. I also used the strap to unbend the tie rod enough to get me back to camp. Then I used the hi-lift to finish the job.
