i'm in the porcess of building a 10.25 rear for my 460 bronco w/ a zf. now, my only options are spool, detroit or and arb. i don really like the fact of eaither being totaly open when not locked, or the 700 dollar proce tag. i herd of the detroit being quite noisy and jerkish feeling under power transfer. i've never riden in a vehicle w/ one, so can you please give me some opinions to go by. now i am left w/ a spool. which is what i want to do. but it is a daily drivin truck. on highways and side streets and parking lots. and about 25% of my driving is offroad on the beach w/ dirt and mus and soft sand. ohh, a LS is out also, because the slip, and when i have one wheel on the ground w/ traction and thats not the one spinning, i get ****ed. the rest of my drive line is pretty solid and i believe it can handel the spool on turns and stuff. but in theory, the rear of the truck will slide under power, and i dont mind that. but what about high speed highway driving, and lane changes. and ramps and such. there will be a traction bar to eliminate wheel hop. gimme some more insight on what the right move to be is. i know a e-locker is out because there is not one made for this axle. but a detroit is not totaly out of the question if it doesnt sound like my rear is going to fall out every time i round the corner.
I don't even notice the spool on the highway.....the only time I notice it is when I'm turning a corner or pulling into a parking space, then it will drag a tire.
you have a spool in your truck? what kinda truck, and do you ever feel the front wheels pushing out? this has givin me hope, lol. i really want the rear end spooled, but i just dont want it to be unsafe.
I've done some searching on the spool for my Ford 9" rear axle, and that was what I decided on. My driving is at least 50% offroad, 5000 miles/year, and this is not my daily driver. If you plan to put more highway miles on your rig, re-consider a limited slip, True-Trac or EZ locker. It will be easier on your tires, and will get you by in 95% of any obstacle offroad.
