I have a 2001 supercrew 5.4 4x4 lost a coil at 79,000 miles , took it to the dealer and got charged $230 to replace it and it was not covered under the extended warrenty. Now I have a second coil that is failing at 98,000 miles. Is there a test that I can preform to find out which coil that it is and save $200 dollars by installing it my self ?
I went thru 2 coils on my 99. My mechanic friend fixed the first two for 75 each. After i sold the truck to a friend another went out and he changed it himself. I know they are very easy to change but i could never tell which one was bad, thats why i paid someone. My buddy says he brought the truck to autozone and they hooked a computer to it and told him which coil it was and he changed it. Ive never heard of autozone doing this but he said they did.
Thanks xtreme. Do you know if your buddys truck had a check engine light on ? My truck doesnot have the engine light on yet but it is acting the same way it did when it lost a coil before. I have purchased a coil Autozone for $42 maybe they can tell me which one it is.
when mine first went out both times the checkengine light didnt come on for a couple of days, Without the checkengine light the computer will not throw a code but with most diagnostic computers you can tell if a cylinder is missfiring or not firing at all without the checkengine light on. Hope this helps
I have the gold plan not the platinum , thanks anyway. I remember when I changed the plugs about three months ago the #4 plug had rust on it. I took the new coil and replaced #4 and ran the truck about 10 miles with no problem , there was water in the #4 hole also. I am glad that this was $42 instead of $230 the dealer charged me. Also I looked at the replaced coil (#1 cost $75 at the dealer) and it is the same brand name and number coil that I got at autozone for $42. That makes me mad when they charge labor and jack the price of parts up. highway robery.

I burnt 2 coils on #4 cylinder because of that leaky coolant line. also I found out that if the dealer has to replace the coil pack they are suppose to remove the fuel rails and all that so they like to do that so they can charge you for that labor and the gaskets and all that goes with it. When I had mine replaced they were covered under warranty and they didnt remove the rails because the guy was able ot wiggle them out.
I don't know what dealer you go to but, here I just replace the bad coil. There is no need to remove the fuel rail and intake. Whoever tells you that either is hosing you or doesn't know what thier doing!
the dealer didnt take the fuel railings off but he told me that the instrustion to properly change a bad coil is to take the rails off so that you dont damage it. that is what he told me but I changed the #3 coil myself and I didnt need to take the rails off you just twist the coil a little and it pulls right out.
