ok, everyone nowadays recognizes the "maltese cross", <--spelling-- AKA the Iron Cross as the West Coast Choppers signal, or just thinks of Jesse James right away.
but theres way more history to it. the German soldiers wore it on their uniforms for many years. can someone please explian where it originated and what it stands for? i use to know alot about history in high school but thats one of the many things i never learned.
iron cross was created first established by friedrich wilhelm lll (king). during wwl wilhelm l brought it back to be awarded as a medal for acts of bravery, heroism, and leadership. very rare for a german enlisted man to be awarded the cross, but hitler, a corporal was awarded the medal twice i think. 1st class and 2nd class. i dont know if he recieved the grand cross. but there were 3 types of medals. if you were a german soldier you really had to kick some a** to recieve that medal.

p.s. i love this website- anytime i have a simple question theres always someone i can rely on for information. theres probably no better website out there. thanks to all
Actually, the Maltese Cross has a history that predates any chopper or Blitzkreig. The Cross is one of the oldest in Judeo-Christian histroy, and was a symbol for the Knights of Malta...which is a small island. The cross is typified by equally-sized legs, and eight definitive points. Each point represents a station of Christianity (which I can't remember for the life of me right now). I came across this trivia before I got one as a tattoo...figured if it was going to be on my body for the rest of my life, then I better damn well know what it meant.
MIKE W asked what a tribal tattoo is. im going to try to post a link to my AOL homepage that has a pic of my tribal tattoo on my back, i dont know how it will work, you might have to copy and paste the link.
i somehow ended up with that cross on my senior ring. it was an error when they wrote the order down. it's engraved in silver on the top of my stone and i liked the way it looked so i just didn't send it back. that was in 98 before it became really big. i have a sticker on my truck window in the middle at the top of that cross but the inside is the red/white/and blue flag design but inside flames.. as in , the flames themselves are colored red/white/and blue if that makes sense. i also have one of those rings that have the interchangeable ***** that has that design that i bought before west coast choppers and old jesse latched onto it. i have heard people say christian cross and iron cross and even druid cross so i think there's a lot of debate as to what it reallllly means.
