A person I work with has a 2001 2 door explorer with the SOHC motor and it's not the flex fuel what ever that means. Anyways his thermistat and housing filled up with this gray looking stuff and of course caused the motor to over heat. What is this gray stuff and where is it coming from? One of the local yards said this is a common problem.
Well, a grey liquid substance is likely oil and coolant mixed together, at least thats true in my experience. I haven't ever looked inside a 4.0, but it sounds odd to me to get that mix in your thermostat unless theres some kind of oil gasket or oil galley that runs right near it. This mixture would make the oil have no lubricity and the coolant would also be useless, so this would be your overheating problem...
This gray stuff turned to a solid blocking off the coolant flow complently causing the motor to over heat. I have never seen anything like this. Oil in your coolant doesn't look like this. Oil + coolant + milky brown. It was like something had a reaction with something and turned it into a solid gray thing.
You ought to try your question in the Explorer Forum, that platform has used the 4.0L SOHC since around '97, so the people over there would probably know whether this is indeed a common problem with that motor. Maybe even try a search over there on it...
Interesting ...I'd have to think that someone would have piped up by now in one of the forums if the problem were as common as was suggested to you by the local yard.
FWIW, I never heard of that being a problem with the SOHC, but then again, I don't know a whole heck of lot about that engine, either.
I've heard that but that still doesn't explain the crap that built up in the stat housing. It bugs me that I don't know where this stuff came from and why.
the stuff you are talking about is the filling in the thermostat that exploded and reacted with the antifreeze i have seen this before i have worked on plenty of them just replace the therm with a high quality stant therm and a good gasket and you will be good for years
What reacted with the antifreeze? The stat housing gasket? I only ask so I myslef would now how to prevent this from happening again, if you can even stop it?
The one that owns the truck decided to keep driving with the temp gauge pegged and trashed the motor so he needs a new motor now. He got it so hot I guess it melted part of the head. I found him a used motor with 45K for $850 but he feels the new motor will be woth the extra $2K.
not the gasket but the internal liquid in the themostat that opens and closes it it is made up of wax copper graphite and mineral oil that is what is in there
