I am going to install a cat-back exhaust system on my 2004 Ranger 4X4. I am considering Gibson, Borla or Magna Flow but do not want a system that is loud inside the cab. Please provide me with your experience with any of these systems. Does the system start at the catalytic converter? Did the system fit without modification? How about performance, power and fuel mileage.
Although I don't have an aftermarket cat-back yet, Gibson should bring the results your looking for. Seems to be one of the favorites on the forum, along with flowmaster 40 series mufflers. Flowmaster is louder, and usually you have to get someone to make your pipes for it. Gibson has a full cat-back system, that will increase performance, sound a little louder and deeper, but shouldn't be noticeably louder on the highway. And yes, they bolt on behind the catalytic converter. Should fit with no mods, just remove the old system, and put the new one in. May be easier to get the system in if you remove the right rear tire. I'm sure you'll get more suggestions. I'm going for the Gibson myself, when I have the money to spare. Been trying to save up for another ranger at the moment, this time it'll be a junker 4-cyl.
Good luck!
I've been real happy with the Gibson SS system on my 1999 3.0L. It is excellent quality, fit perfectly, and no
obnoxious "droan" sound at highway speeds. It has a very
nice mello tone to it.
Do you know for SURE if that mod affects the warrantee? I have 3 different answers from 3 dealers, including where I purchased 04. "My Ford" web site provides NO answer either. "Ask Kate" says read the manual or ask the dealer.
Does anyone know for sure? Thanks for your help Joe
In my case, my warranty was out, so it was a no brainer!!
I WOULD NOT do any mods to a vehicle still under warranty!! And I wouldn't put a K&N air filter on ANY vehicle IN or OUT of warranty!!!!!!
I have the Magna Flow dual exhaust on my 2000 Ranger. It is doing great for me. if i feel too loud I just switch to higher gear. Bob Ayers why not K&N?
I tried a magna flow muffler with a custom-fit 2 1/2 pipe installed at a local shop and the noise level was above where I want it. I have a magna flow on my 98 F150 and like it fine. Thanks for the reponse. I do plan on a cold air kit, either K&N or similar.

IMHO, the claimed performance gains are all "HYP", and the amount of dirt the will pass into your engine.
Re: Bob's comment about dirt. I can't say if the K&N lets in more dirt or not, I live in Tampa Bay and don't leave paved roads. I just sold a 98 XLT 3.slow auto. Put cat back flowmaster on 4 yrs ago and got more noise. I put a K&N drop in 15K ago and noticed a TREMENDOUS improvement in performance. I woukd have kept it if Ford wasn't giving away 04s. You MAY be right about the dirt, the 4.0 isn't lacking power so maybe I'll stay with paper.
I Have A Magnaflow Cat Back System With A 3" Stainless Steal Pipe And A K&n Filter In My 01 Edge 3.0. This Set Up Is Great For Me! I Definetily Feel The Top End Difference On The Highway And When Hauling My 2500 Lb Camper. The Magnaflow System Cost About $240. This Was Money Well Spent.
My Gibson on my 93 4.0 offers a nice mellow sound at idle. It is a deeper sound than stock but doesn't drone in the cab. Under acceleration, at about 2000 RPM it sounds sreal nice but looses it's sound at the higher RPMs. I am very happy with it and will get one again if I ever get rid of this truck.
