head gaskets
i cant belive i am asking this question, but it goes to show, the older you get the more you forget, i am putting to together a 5.0 motor with my brother,when installing head gaskets. the steel rings on the gaskets do they the sit on the block or up towards the head...please help we are dying to get this thing running again but dont want to blow a set of gaskets in the process ! lol

The head gaskets for a 302 go on one way and way way only. If you get them backwards the motor will over heat. The gaskets are marked front and thats all you need to know to install them correctly. You may think one of the gaskets is upside down but as long as you have the front facing the front of the engine you will be fine. FRONT should be stamped in the gasket.
