Wife's front door panels broke loose (kids, nuff said) and got caught opening and closing the doors. Anyone got a decent source ofr these things? 1996 Aerostar XLT. The vehicle runs great but needs some cosmetic work. Thanks for any assistance y'all.
your best bet is the junk yard. all panels are similiar in dimensions to the best of my knowledge. you could do a junkyard search on the internet. i've gotten parts that way before.they find em, you call em,... presto! car parts found, and delivered to the house. (credit card required of course.) how bad is the damage? could you piece it back together and reinforce it from the back with metal, or plastic or plywood?? just a thought.i'm thinking of adding carpeting to the lower half of mine, like on the delux models. im also going to create a map pocket too. all still in the conceptual phase at this point. good luck rick, 4 kids and a 91 aerostar. 197,900 miles and going!
Started out as fasteners but now they are cracked and probably not repairable but never thought about "backing" them, possibly with 1/4 ply, or even a little thinner masonite type stuff. Thanks for the idea. Where did you get the fasteners (stupid Q but hey, you already know where you got them, right?)
I just went down and bought a fiberglass kit with the resin, harder, and Cloth.
Ruff up the back alittle and the stuff sticks great. Also glues any cracks together.
I also have had a problem with interior panels cracking around the screw holes. I never thought about reinforcing them from the back. If I ever find some spare time I'll give that a try
What I usually do when a screw hole blows out is replace the screw with a self-drilling wafer head screw (looks like a flat head with built-in washer around the rim). If the blow-out is really bad (missing plastic chunks), I use a fender washer under the wafer head. It looks kind of cheesy, but the interior is getting tired anyway, and it's a lot better than a door panel falling off whenever the door is opened.
