I am trying to run the eec IV test thingy, I am doing it exacly as the book says
1- I start the engine and let it idle untill it is of normal temp.
2- make sure all electrical equipment it off
3- turn off engine and remove the key
4- close door and make sure no lights are on
5- connect tester to the connector (as soon as the 6 sided connector comes in contact with the tester the light comes on, but there is no sound coming from the tester, even though the ausio switch is set to on.
6- turn key to on (reaching through window and NOT opening the door)
7- switch tester from 'hold' to 'test'
8- NOTHING HAPPENS
I must have stood there for 5 minutes waiting for that light to atleast flicker and nothing happened, I heard no clicks from the engine, no fans turned on.
I am at a loss of what could be wrong.
I dont have an owners manual to look "no codes" up in so hopefully someone can help.
nope. but the thing is, when I am hooking it up, as soon as the 6 sided connector connects with the tester, the tester light turns on and stays on. even when following through with the test, the tester light never turns off or even flickers.
is it possible that the tester is messed up? this is what I am hoping, and I am going to take the tester back today.
By any chance are your fuel pumps not turning on? The self test connector is spliced between fuel pump relay & ECA. Do the pins in the connector look good, not bent. Wiring look OK?. As you say it might be a bad scanner. Why are you pulling the codes?
Im not sure if the fuel pump is not turning on, the truck runs fine, so I assume it is. the pins arent bent or corroded (I cant see inside the connector to see if it is) but nothing appears to be amiss. Im mostly just trying to farmiliarize myself with the vehicle, and figured it couldnt hurt to see if it was putting out any codes
The simplest way to fgure this out would be to take it to Autozone. They will pull the codes (or have the same problem you ae having) no charge. Getting familiar with how your truck works is a very good idea.
I wonder if the fault is in your step 7 (switch from hold to test). I really don't know, because I always use a cheap analog voltmeter instead of a scanner/code reader to pull codes. Procedure is exactly the same except you eliminate step 7. Maybe check the instructions that came with your scanner/code reader against the instructions at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html Let us know if you figure it out.
they look very similar, except the instructions that came with the scanner were more detailed, like make sure all accessories are off and little stuff. I am thinking it must be the scanner, as soon as I get some time I will take the scanner back and get another, and it all else fails, I will take the truck to autozone.
I think it has to be either the scanner or the electrical system is screwed up, because the light in the scanner is not supposed to come on when the scanner is set to "hold" because it is not supposed to be greaded on that setting.
