It might be cheap but I'd be concerned about adequate airflow thru it. When I'm using the evap cooler in my garage, there's quite a difference in airflow when the screen door is open/closed.

Never had a problem using a screen. I've even used them on the V-6 chevy motor that was notorious for overheating. No-screen = over heating. Have screen = no over heating. The window screen will not reduce airflow on a "clean rad" IMHO.
These vehicles were used for driving through 4-6 foot tall prairie grass, crop fields and anything else. Lots of dust and grass pollen. A screen works.
