Just bought 89 f250 from a buddy and i am stumped.Said it had bad alternator.Got it home on the battery and it has never started again.Replaced starter relay, battery, ignition switch, eec and fuel pump relays to no avail.I have yet to replace the alternator. It will crank with a starter switch jumping the starter relay, but will not crank with the key.It will run for alittle on starting fluid but there is nothing coming from the fuel pump.It seems like alot went wrong at once.Any help would be appreciated.
Make sure your battery is still good, and all the connections are nice and tight if any are loose it'll do that (like the battery posts) sometimes mine will do that and all I have to do is pop the hood and jiggle it, get some backing soda and water and clean it then put a little clean oil there (it help protect it so its harder for corrosion to come back) Go ahead and check if theres any codes while your at it.
I checked the negative cable and it looks like a wolverine was gnawing on it near the post along with wear near the frame. Will replace and see what happens.I am a first time Ford owner, how do you pull codes from this truck? There is a plug in on the driver side inner fender that is marked test.Obviously some kind of scanner would be hooked there.Other makes of cars use a check engine light that flashes in conjunction with turning the key to produce codes,is this also the case with Fords? Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the link,I'll give the codes a try.Like I said before,we ran it home on the battery with a dying alternator.I know the starting and charging systems are different, but could a dead alt/voltage reg. cause a no crank condition? It may be a dumb question but I am trying to cover all the bases.Thanks.
Battary cables, and the battary can cause the alternator to crap out due to over working. I would change the fuel filter and check the wires going to the fuel pump since you said there was no fuel. The not starting at the key is there power inside the cab lights ect??? Cause you could have blown he fusable link under the hood if you have no power in the cab. I had the fusable link go when my cables were shot do to over amping the wires.
I have full power to the cab, interior lights, dash lights, etc.I tried a code scanner and i am pulling no codes. The negative cable is green inside and has chafed the frame,i will replace this first. The fuel pump in the rear tank and on the frame rail are new along with the valve that switches the tanks.I can hear the pump click but no other noise from it.It just seems too much went wrong at once.Where was the fusible link that blew on your truck?
No codes? ewwww. i had that problem myself on my '87 F150. Turned out the computer bit the dust... Took me forever to figure it out too. i would disconnect the negative battery cable, replace the cable itself, then replace the battery. See if you can get codes to pull after it gets some power to the electrical system...
I did not try jumping it because both batteries I have are less than 2 years old and were reading 12.2-12.4 volts.I removed the negative cable, and it just about fell apart in my hands.I started to put the new one in and the skies parted,so i will finish up tonight.Do you think jumping it will help with this type of voltage?
Well I know on my truck I had starting/charging issues a few times and each time it had to do with a fusable like. The fues didn't actually blow but the wire itself broke, I guess from being rusy and brittle. This caused there to be no charge, another time it wouldn't start. Are the fuel pumps priming at all? Another time, I pulled codes from the truck and broke the wire that goes to the fuel pump relay. The other fuseable are behind the battery, under the solinoid mounted on your fender. Hope this helps
Thanks for the reply, all i hear from the fuel pump is a click. after the eec relay clicks, the fuel pump itself will click about 3 seconds later.I changed the negative cable and still got nothing. This is my first Ford and I am not feeling to good about it.Now it has become an obsession to try and figure this out.To recap,I replaced eec relay, fuel pump relay, starter solenoid, neg.cable, fuel pump in rear tank, fuel pump on frame rail, ignition switch. It has a new steering box, rear tank, brake lines, tie rod ends.I don't think it should be scrapped but i am getting stressed.Even though my buddy gave me the truck,i don't want to pump too much cash into something that may be a lost cause. What about the computer?Could this be the problem?Any help would be appreciated.
Will the computer pull codes? That may be a good indication of a bad computer, although generally when a computer goes **** up the engine will just run really rich - it's called the limp in mode.
