I borrowed a Sunpro code scanner from a friend, followed directions and no codes.Looked in the Haynes book and it recommended the key on engine off test (KOEO) which I will try.
This may be dumb, but you said that the engine cranks when you hotwire it. My 79 had that problem, so we replaced the selenoid and it worked. I don't know if your truck has the same type of selenoid (a round black thing on the + from the battery, with a couple of small wires and one more big wire running out).
Is it auto or manual? wouldn't a bad nuetral safety switch keep it from cranking? If auto, there maybe a connetor with a jumper down there by the petals that needs to be intact. Jus a thought..
I did replace the one on the truck and had two spares my buddy gave me.The solenoid sounds the same as yours,4 or 5 wires coming in 1 coming out and one small red/blue wire hooked to the s post. Thanks for the reply.I think something in the wiring fried. What else is there?
it sounds like a ground prob. eiether ignition, alt., str., solinoid, fuel pump or somthing. i had a simillar prob with my 88 89 f150. she would turn over but would not crank unless i used str. fluid. my short was a wire not gnd to my neg terminal. electrical is a pain so be patient. Good luck!
Thanks for all the replies,a friend found 3 burned/corroded fusible links. We got it to crank from the key and he said fuel is getting to the injector but it is not sending it to where it needs to fire.My question is,there is a gold colored metal box behind the dash near the gas pedal,is this the eec that controls fuel delivery? This box has a connector with a bunch of pins.Is there any way to test?Is this something i could get from a junkyard if it is the problem or should i buy it new? It seems like i am close. Thanks again.
