I'm not sure you have the same transmission, but on my ZF5 there are 2 plugs, a drain and a fill. I ingored the refill capacity because it is supposed to be filled up to the bottom of the fill opening. Yes, you should use ATF. I used Motorcraft Mercon ATF in mine, which is what Ford recommended.

You should have a fill plug on the drivers side, 22 or 24mm wrench. Then a drain plug the lower one on the driver side also. Make sure to remove fill plug first. I think it holds 3-5 qts, can't remeber man. It takes regular dexIII/mercon tarnny fluid. just fill it till it starts to trickle out, then stop. hope I helped. There should be a quanity chart in the back of your manual( 2pts=1qt).

My 01 Ranger takes 2.8 quarts of Mercon. Get a pump to put it in with.

I agree. It would be unfortunate to drain the old fluid without having some way of putting the new stuff in. Buy more than you need because some of the fluid will be held in the pump hose and never make it to the transmission. Once you start sucking air it won't move.

Welcome to FTE! I posted a quick and easy method to change the fluid in the M5OD. To see it, click on this: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...hreadid=204530

Hope that helps.
And OBTW, I have always used ATF just as the manual calls for.
