I have a 1997 F350 PSD w/113k on it. It's been running great! Yesterday, out of the blue, on the way home from work (I had the A/C and stereo on sitting at a stop light), the truck just STALLED! I cranked it a couple of times and it would only crank, not fire. Finally, it started (I turned the A/C and stereo off). I don't think the A/C and the stereo (stock) had anything to do with it. So, I hit the pedal and took off. Approx. 2-3 miles later @ 55 MPH, the truck stalled while driving! The truck slowed a little but then seemed to re-ignite and keep going
after that. The other 10 miles home, no stalling, just like normal.
Does this sound like one of those crank or cam sensors? What about the injector pump? The fuel filter was recently replaced by Ford (1-2k miles ago) and just filled it with Amoco Diesel the previous day.
If I was a betting man, I'd put money on it being your Cam Position Sensor. The miles on the truck is about right for it to be going out. Mine went out at 124,000.
The best place to get a replacement is at an International Parts dealer. They might ask whether you want the "original" or the "updated" CPS. There was a running change in the material in the electrical contacts midway through the '96 model year, but since yours is a '97, you want the "updated" one. When you tell them it's for a Powerstroke, their eyes might glaze over. If so, tell them it's for a T444E, which is the International model number for the engine.
It'll cost you about $86 at International, or $150 at Ford, for the same part.
I agree with Quadzilla, Cmp sensor is a definate possibility. However, mine did the same thing after I replaced it!! I got wise and removed my chip (Taped in place) and cleaned the terminals and reinstalled it and it hasn't stalled since. SO, moral of the story is, check your chip BEFORE you spend the $100!!!

Have these gone up? I just bought one at an International dealer and it was $102.80 plus tax.
Thanks ya'll! The company I work for is owned by a Ford dealership, so I'll see what my "cost" is for a new Ford part. Then I'll see what I can do with a International part.
Would the cam position sensor also cause a slight reduction in performance? It seems that during acceleration, the truck is lagging...
