Shocks!!!!

I am trying to get rid of an annoting vibration and was going to start with the easy stuff first (shocks). What kind of shocks does everyone recommend? Does it also matter if you tow alot or just ride down the road? I am considering Rancho RS 9000 adjustable shocks. Are these good for this big of a truck or should I consider anything else?

As far as vibrations I would start looking at the balance on the tires and the u-joints as well as the carrier bearing. There are many things that can cause vibrations and I don't think shocks are one of them. However, the factory shocks on these trucks are junk to say the least. I had 25k on my 99 and every one of them were leaking. I replaced them with Pro Comps and they were a major imrprovement to the ride. The Rancho 9000's are some of the best if you are going to change them.

Thanks for the reply,
I was replacing the simple stuff first.I already replaced the stock tires and was going to then replace the shocks.
What is the procedure for checking the carrier bearing?
Should the axle have any play in it at all, or should there be a little play in it?
Do you know about how much a carrier bearing is and what the procedure is for changing it?

Without knowing the year and configuration of your truck you can check the carrier bearing by just getting under the truck and seeing if there is any excessive play either in the bearing or maybe the rubber is rotted. Also when you are under there check the u-joints by grabbing the driveshaft and twisting it back and forth and moving it up and down(do this with the truck in neutral). If there is play, you WILL notice it.

Shocks!!!!

I had an annoying vibration on my 77 chevy crewcab a few years ago. I found several problems: bad u-joints, tire balance, bad wheel bearing, broken engine mount. Fixed all these and guess what; I still had the vibration.

The vibration would start after driving a few miles. I then thought it was the transmission, but the transmission shop said it was OK.

Driving home from the transmission shop I decided to check the front wheels when I got home. I jacked the front up and found that the right wheel would not turn. I assumed that the brake hose was blocked. I replaced it and the vibration disappeared.

So you might want to see if you have a kinked or partially blocked brake hose. Worth a try if you have checked everything else.

Pete
