I have a 2001 Expedition that is 3 years old with 73K miles. I am overall happy with the trcuk and plan to keep it. I am due for new shocks and wanted to get some advice on what to buy. I do not do any off road driving, mainly just highway and city driving, no rugged terrain really. I have read a lot about the Rancho RS9000X adjustable shocks, and they get great reviews but I don't know if they are necessary for the normal type of driving I do. In other words, are they overkill for my purposes? I found a place online that sells the set of 4 for $290 with free shipping. I am just trying to determine if that is more than what I need. Suggestions? Thanks!
I drive pretty much the same as you, mostly on pavement and no towing. When mine is due Ill probably just get a good brand standard shock to try to preserve the original ride as I am pretty pleased the way it is. Maybe some good Monroe shocks. It just depends on how close the price is to the premium ones they are. I will be installing myself regardless what brand.
Mine is a 2000 but only have 50K on them right now.

I have the Bilsteins and love them. The ride is SLIGHTLY more harsh than stock but there is almost NO body roll on curves. Instead of riding like a bus, it is more nimble, almost carlike.
Installed Bilstiens on my 98 Expy have to agree with Bigman slightly more harsh in town but on the highway alot better going thru curves steers better not so tippy feeling!
I just had the Bilsteins installed on my 99 XLT 4X4 and I haven't noticed any difference from the factory shocks. My advice, save your money, buy a decent shock (something that you can get locally and for less then $275 shipped) and put the extra cash into another mod or your pocket.
kml, the 9000's are excellent shocks, but are unnecessary unless you consistently drive in a broad range of terrains and conditions. Opt for the Rancho RSX's instead. I put 4 on my Expy two years ago (~$150 delivered from Summit). They took untold amounts of roll and bounce out of the suspension.
I just put Monroe sensatract on my y2k with 65k yesterday. They come with a life time warrenty and they were available locally for $200 cnd dollars for all 4. It cost me $65 cnd to install. Truck rides much better, less bounce.
