I have a 97 F250 PSD and I was pulling my 29 foot 5th wheel, the truck was bouncing pretty bad in spots while going down the highway! I think I have the stock shocks on there. Should I buy new shocks, and if so, what kind?
What's the pin weight of the trailer? You could be at or over the GVWR. The best wayt to stop the bounce is to add airbags, although it won't raise the GVWR.
The trailer weight is 7500 total and its a gooseneck(if that makes a difference). The GVWR is 10,000 but I was running with no water or anything in the camper.
My truck has 78000 miles and I am the second owner. The guy kept good records and I don't see anything about new shocks!
I would guess airbags are the way to go then. You're running pretty close to the max of the GVWR and shocks will help a little, but airbags will help a lot.
Look up either firestone ride-rite or air lift super duty bags. Spend the money if you get them and get the on board compressor and gauges with the in cab controls. They are worth every penny. Plus it will give you an air supply for an air horn. And also a way to fill up tires whever you may roam!!!
Here are some pics of mine. I got the ride-rite bags, 5000 lb wt capacity.
I would make sure to mention to whoever you buy the airbags from that you have a fifth wheel hitch installed. I remember reading in one of the other forums recently about installation issues because of the hitch.
Fire Rooster, do you have air horns yet?
(Sorry I/we hijacked your bypass filter thread )

No I do not have air horns yet. I am tring to locate some horns off of a train to mount so I can get that loud beautiful whistle. I will have them though.
Airbags are definitly the way to go. If you are looking for a cheaper solution and your truck doesn't already have them from the factory you might want to try a set of aftermarket helper leaves. They bolt on above your factory springs and you have to add four bumpstops ( two for each side one in the front and one in the back ) to your frame. They don't effect your ride unloaded but when you add a load the helper leave contacts the bumpstops effectively increasing your spring rate. They may eliminate your problem. If your truck does have factory helpers they will have to be removed to install airbags. My 97 didn't have them but my 99 does and it tows much nicer then my 97 did
I don't think that my truck has those helper leaves! Can you buy that setup from your local Checker store? After closer examination, I think the shocks that are on there are the original ones. (I have 78000 miles on the truck) I looked into airbags but with my limited resources that option is out for now!
