ABS False firing

I have a 1997 Expedition with front ABS. The ABS starts cycling while making gradual stops. It usually starts at about 15 mph and continues to near 0. The problem is intermittent. The abs light has never come on indicating any faults. I disconnected one of the front wheel sensors to see if the fault light was working an sure enough it does come on as expected. Does anyone have any suggestions? Can the wheel sensors go bad without causing an abs error?

I have a 94 Explorer and just had the brakes disk pads replaced and new rotors put on. I started having simular ABS activation when making a variety of gradual to fast stops. The ABS would not lock up, but would make the brake pedal vibrate for brief moments. I had Midas bleed the brakes but the conditions is still there.

I have a 1997 fore explorer 4x4. I have had this problem in the past. I hope as I do most of us do our own brakes. If not you have way too much money. I replaced all the rotors and replaced the pads. I also found the the fords seem to be very finicky about just a little brake fluid. I fill mine slightly above the fill line. These things have solved this problem. I change my pads as often as I get time to. I bought eveything from autozone and the pads have a lifetime warranty even against wear. Whenever I feel up to it I spend 40 mins or so. and swap all the pads. Being that I make $20 an hour at work this costs me about 18 bucks. Not bad. And if the rotors look worn at all I replace them as needed. I dont see the point in turning my rotors. They are relativly cheap. $22 i think and it costs 8-10 to turn them and I loose them for the day. Also new pads always feel great.

The most important thing that I have found though seems to be the brake fluid level. Everytime I have a problem I notice the fluid is slightly low. I assume due to pad waer and cylinder deflection taking up more fluid. Just my .02. hope this helps

I had the brakes checked by Goodyear and the system drained, flushed and refilled. The mis-firing stopped. The last time Midas worked on the front brakes they did not open the bleed valves and forced contaminated fluid back into the system.

Checkout this link. This is a very common problem that not to many people seem to know about.

ABS false firing update

I got the problem fixed by repalcing the front driver side hub assembly. Shortly after posting the ABS false firing message I started getting bearing noise when turing to the left. The abs problem has not returned since. There must have been something wrong with the sensor.
