fuel filter change

I will be changing fuel filter on 1984 6.9 for the first time(new to me)tomorrow.I don't have a owners manual yet but the Chiltonsmanual I have says not to fill new filter with fuel when changing? Is this correct?I've been around big trucks and buses since 1975,I've always watched the mechanics fill filters before installing so they won't lose its prime???
Thanks

That's odd. I have always primed the filters for every diesel I've owned, worked on or drove. Hmmm. Not sure what the harm could possibly be. Unless a current 6.9 owner posts different, I'd prime it but then again...you might just want to wait and see what that guy would say.

fuel filter change

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Jan-02 AT 01:29 AM (EST)]I was at a truck show two years ago, and I asked this same question to a guy at the Caterpillar booth. I had always primed my filters too. He said that when you pour fuel into the filter you have "unfiltered" fuel that has contaminated the "clean" side of the filter. Cat now has a check valve in their filters to prevent "unfiltered" fuel from getting to the "clean" side of the filter when you pour fuel in them. He also told me to use the hand primer on my engine, or to just crank, and crank it untill it hits. "There should be enough fuel in the head to get it primed again." He told me. Still have not been able to prime my 3406E or C-15 Cats this way. Moral of the story; Do whatever works.

I don't know the differences in the engines, but I have never primed the fuel filter in my '01 and it always fires right up and runs fine.

BigDeezil58 is absolutly correct, you should never pour unfiltered fuel into a filter. Just be sure you batteries are fully charged, it might take a while to prime the filter and purge the air from the system.

The older 6.9 and 7.3 have a air relief (looks like a tire valve stem) on the fuel filter mounting. If you have problems priming the filter, you might have to let some of the air out of the system.
