Well here is an odd question I would like to use a factory ford Diesel RPM sensor which sits over the cam gear on the 7.3 PSD and are wondering what it registers off of. better yet if it were installed on a 6.9 or a 5.9 cummins anything without a cam sensor and then installed into a later truck how many magnetic marks would need to be put on the crank or what ever to get a somewhat accurate reading. To restate i want to use the facotory sending unit but i do not know what it captures as a countible signal or rotational item on the crank and can it be simulated ie. on an outside item like the crank using magnetic paint stripes? I know The Diesel Dude is very fluent in this, so if you have time Joe i would deffinately appreciate your input.
BTW Joe i did do that Diesel 6 cyl conversion it was quite fun my next will be puting another binder motor into a ford, much easier on the brain for motor mounting, unless i get ugly ideas and put a 466 into something. Thanks for the input back then.
Thanks for the help if anyone can
Dusty

Go to www.freeautoadvice.com/powerstroke/ On the left side of the page click on PSD pictures. Near the bottom of the page there is a pic of the cam gear, you can count the windows in it.
If I don't forget it, I'll count them tonight at work. There is one wide window and one narrow window to let the computer know whether it is at TDC of the compression stroke or exhaust stroke. The other windows are all the same size.
There are 24 "windows" in the cam wheel which includes one wide window and one narrow window, 180 degrees apart, to let the computer know whether the firing cylinder is on its compression or exhaust stroke.
Thanks Joe and Les
You guys have been a great help, now i just have to find some type of fan or wheel to mount on a pully and get 48 clicks to one rotation of the crank.
Thanks again guys
