I have aspirations to put a powerstroke in my 78 F250 4x4. Has anyone done it? Advise against it? Problems? If I can't do this, I'll probably end up rebuilding my 400
That is a very difficult mod.. you need a donor powerstroke vehicle, as you need the computer, and maybe the transmission to go with it too. The peowerstroke is lot heavier than your 400 too, so upgrading the front suspension would be a good idea. You would also need to get duplicate fuel lines, the '78 will not have them. Other than that, it should be doable, but complicated..

Think about how much you are going to spend to do this conversion and then figgure how much gas you can buy with the same amount of money. when you do the numbers I don't see any way this swap will save you a dime
If I was actually planning on saving money, I'd probably jsut go buy a new truck. I'm jsut trying to satisfy a strange desire that I have right now.........
Ok I know what you mean. You just want to do this for the chalenge,,I can relate to that,I once did some major modifications to a mack fuel system so I could burn #4 bunker oil in it just because someone told me it couldn't be done. Cost me a bit of time and a few bucks and never really saved me anything but I made it work and I sure learned alot
it isn't just the challenge though...or the illusion of saving money. diesels are so much better than gas...more efficient, gobs of torque, nearly water proof with some prep, low maintenaince, high reliability....etc....i'm looking to put one in my '79...but i need to find a way to keep my 4-speed
surely there is someone out there that has done this swap and can offer some advice. My friend just put a cummins in his 93 F250 and he found gobs of info and adaptor stuff on the net, but so far I'm comin up empty-handed.
Well, I put a 6.9 in a '75 F250 Highboy. Actually, it was fairly straight forward. The main difference is you will need to get a good factory wiring diagram so you can split out all of the wiring.
