I picked up teh short block today from the local machine shop. What I expected to be $200-300, of course turned out to be $540.
dissasembled shortblock, sleeved number cylider, honed cylinder, micro polished crank, reassembled. They said everything checks out real good.
He did say they corrected the rod locations. What does that mean? Aren't all my rods the same? Why would one belong in a certain position? Will this change the balance? Guess I should have it balanced after installing the flex-plate and the Romac damper ??? It was internally balanced before.
I'm still waiting for my Romac balancer. I also ordered a chrome dizzy hold down bracket and chrome water neck.
I ordered a mess of new gaskets and ARP stainless header bolts. Another $200 in parts and shipping....aaarrrgghhhh...
I also got my 9qt FT oil pan. It's getting tanked and blasted now at the machine shop. It was pretty dirty and rusty. It's going to be a challenge with the windage tray and the rear sump pickup. The pickup looks to be in excellent shape with a clean pick screen and larger tube. I'll try to get some pics up soon.
This friggin' motor is already worth a new truck :-( Albeit, a small truck.
I think maybe after being balanced there marked? so they go back in the line-up to the crank? I think thats how Hitchcock use to do mine? Its been to many years..LOL!
Are you going to get the Motor done before the Nats? Russ
still hoping to make the nats. Gaskets are on overnight, should be in tomorrow.
I think all that's left is the pushrods. But Smith Bros took care of those in one day before...so that should not be a time constraint.
Here are some pics of the oil pan plan and the block with "I" and "E" markings. What was he marking the block for? I obviously have some learning to do with engine internals...
Your rods are all the same weight if it was properly balanced but he might be talking about the direction of the oil hole on the small end. It should not matter which cylinder the rods are in. This hole needs to be pointed at the inside of the block, not towards the outside. This may be what he was referring to.
are you going to be ready for the FE nationals greg, its sneaking right up, seems like you have plenty of work to do before then. Glad to here you got it back, shouldnt be long before we see a post of the FE446 back on the road again, good luck
I don't think it will take that long to get running. Considering it was basically the same engine in the same truck that was running...hopefully, it will be straight forward. And this is my 3rd time to assemble and install and FE in a 67-72 truck.
If the pan get's too complicated, I'll go back to the stock pan. But, I think I can make this work.
Glad to see you back at it. Good luck. My truck just ate another flexplate, the motor will be coming back out for the 3rd time now. It is a pain sometimes. But I do enjoy it. Keep trying you won't be able to wipe the grin off your face when it's blasting down the track.
Where did you get the FT pan? I looked all over the place can't find one.
i found one on a 391 out of a F700 grain truck, i havnt installed it yet but i will when i get a new oil pump, i may be able to find another one if your interested.
I snagged the FT pan on Ebay. I won it for about $15 plus shipping. The shipping was actually more than the part. The same guy has another FT pan listed now.
you can see he actually reused the pics from the pan I won. His feedback is good. And our transaction was very smooth. If you're looking, I would not hesistate to buy from this guy.

Remember to test-fit the dipstick / pan / windage tray combination. I didn't and will be without a working dipstick until the next time my motor comes out.
Greg, mighty glad to hear that it's moving along so well for ya. Hopefully it'll be smooth sailing this time. I can't wait for some more audio/video! That shore is a big butt pan ya got there!!

Maybe that # 1 rod was backwards, and didn't oil the cylinder, causing the scoring?
