I own a 2002 PSD F350 S/W 7.3 S/C 4x4 A/T with 28000 miles on it, with no heavy hauling as of yet. I do run 55-65 on the highway 50% of the time along with stop and go traffic. My question is, how long should I let it idle down before turning off the engine? I know the manuel advises 7-10 minutes after towing a heavy load. I want my turbo to last.
I would follow what the owner's manual says until you get a set of gauges. You can also buy a device that automatically shuts down the truck when it has properly cooled down. I have no idea how much these cost though.

I guess your right John. I thought since I have not done any heavy hauling, the idle time would be different. I do need the gauges and plan on getting them soon. I have to find a place in Balto, Md that could install them.I am leaning toward Autometer gauges.
Thanks again
With today's turbo's, turbo bearings and turbo lubrication, some will argue if a cool down is really necessary.
If you are concerned and want to cool your PSD down, get a pre-turbo installed pyrometer and a turbo timer. Lots of on line sites sell the gauge and timers.
Most will suggest that 300 degrees is a good EGT target temperature before shutting down.
Check out http://www.novaps.org/Sovaps.asp They're up in your neck of the woods, so check em out. I'm sure they'd be more than willing to help you get the guages in.
You will be surprised how quickly the exhaust temps change when you get your gauges. After normal driving, my exh temp drops to 300 after about 30 to 45 seconds of idling. After a hard run, it may take a couple of minutes. I haven't towed since I installed my gauges, so I can't tell you how long of an idle is necessary. It seems that no more than 5 minutes should be necessary.
