The "regular" 5.0L had a 4R70W (code "U") transmission 1994 and up. (AOD prior to 94 and 4.9L&5.8L used only the E4OD) The towing package upgraded the transmission to an E4OD (code "E") and added a rear sway bar, transmission cooler, hitch, wiring etc... The Off-Road package included the 4x4 decal and skid plates for the fuel tank and transfer case. The brochure even says that a limited slip diff for the read axle was standard for 1996 but it doesn't elaborate as to what models that covers. (4x2 and 4x4 or just 4x4??)
Just checked the mail Ford sent me a letter stating what options my truck has. It does have the tow package. Also the bounus of supercool, 4x4, and heavy duty rear springs.
The off road package would include skid plates and decals. A good indicator of the tow package is a Ford factory-installed 7-pin trailer connector. I also have the trouble-prone E4OD, which I think came with all 4x4's.
After looking at my papers again it doesn't say that I have the off road package it says off road sticker. The quad shocks do not come with the handleing package mine does not have them. I know for my 87 bronco the quad shocks were part of the tow package but they wern't for the 96.
96 f150 XLT 4x4 standard cab with short wheel base and box. I have the 5.0L with 4r70w tranny, trans cooler in front of radiator, sway bars front and back, dual shocks up front, class III or IV receiver with 4 prong rectangle trailer plug, max cool A/C, heavy rear spring and skid plate for transfer case.
When I got it was told that it had the tow/handling/off road package?
I have a fleet buyer/commercial booklet for the 1996 model year F150/250/350/350 DRW and f-super duty. It's not very big, about 6 pages. It was printed August 1995. Ford always changes things mid-year (job 2) so it's possible that at some point the tow package didn't come with the E4OD anymore. The handling package is the only thing I can see that would give you the quad shocks and sway bars. The Off-Road package has been the same for decades; skid plates and decal. I dunno... Does anyone have a sales brochure from a dealer? There's probably 2 printings of it available.
bought the truck two years ago, owners manual only. the spare covers the gas tank, so I couldn't say if there is a skid plate there. I do know I don't have the "off road" sticker but a skid plate protects the transfer case.
Now I'm really curious as to know for all of us!
built on oct95 in norfolk va.
parts store has always asked if early or late 96 model.
Well I have the skid plates and the decal said it was a deleted item so I don;t know if I have the off road pkg or not.
I do know in the paper they sent me most stuff was listed as a package(tow pkg, handling pkg super cool pkg insulation pkg? ) Thats why I don't think I have the off road pkg. What I would think is that the dual shocks would be for a snow pkg? or something like that. To the ones with the dual shocks do you have the sticker on the door jamb that say not to be used as a ambulance?
Side note just got dual exhaust installed today WOW sounds great.
