My 86 F150 4x4 appears to be unable to shift out of neutral. Nothing happens when you shift into 2 or 4 Hi under any circumstances, and I get a grinding noise if I try to shift into 4L with the engine running and trans in drive. I'm pretty sure the trans is still operational (since it makes that wonderful rattling/grinding sound of a spinning automatic shifted into park at speed when you try to shift it into park after sitting there in drive and not going anywhere.). Anyone have any ideas? It's a 302 w/ AOD, and the transfer case is an NP208F.
You can try shifting the transfer case when the trans is in Nuetral and truck is stopped or rolling very slowly. That is how I shift mine, though from your description it sounds like you have bigger issues going on in your transfer case than improper shifting method if you are actually shifting it into 2Hi or 4Hi and it isn't engaging. On my BW1356 t-case I have to push down on the shifter to shift out of either Nuetral or 4Low (don't remember which). Don't know if your t-case is similar like that or not. It's not a good idea to try engaging 4Low or shifting out of Nuetral with the trans in Drive. I would think you should be able to go from 2Hi to 4Hi with the trans in Drive though.
Sounds like the t-case is shot, have you checked the fluid? Theyre not hard to rebuild, or you can probably find a used one pretty cheap. Its pretty easy to swap out, too.
