400m?
Can anyone tell me what a 400M engine is and what the 'M' stands for? 
What's the big difference between it and a 390, 360 or 351? How does it rate compared with other engines as far as power, reliability and cost of maintenance goes?

First there is no "M" attached to the 400 engine. Ford never designated it as a 400M, the "M" was only attached to the 351. Please check the Forum Guidelines post at the top of this forum for information about the discussion of meaning of "M".

the 400 is a member of the "335" series engine family, as are the 351C and 351M. the 360, 390, and others are of the "FE" family. the two families are completely different, very few if any parts will interchange. the 351W is of the "Windsor" family which also includes the 289,302, and others . the Boss 302 is a factory crossbreed, it uses a W block and Cleveland style heads with altered water passages. as far as comparing to others, the 400 has the longest stroke available at 4". only the 351M gets the "M" as in 351M/400.
