Now ya got me curious, so would you mind elaborating on the cold start viscosity thing ? As you know, or maybe don't, I have piston slap when cold. Going to the Mobil 1 10W-30 seemed to quiet that a bit.
Getting more and more off topic...
10w versus 5w when cold. Ford calls for 5w - when you start with a 10W your oil is thicker when you first start it - that's probably why your piston slap sounded better, the oil in the cylinder was thicker. And/or the flow rate was better with Mobil 1, and the cylinders got lubed quicker, or something like that.
I'm dizzy thinking about all this stuff.
Take out all the pistons and fit teflon buttons into the skirts - oh wait, no skirts... hey, they CHEATED US!
The funny thing is, the one thing synth manufacturers use to tout as special was the oil consumption. Maybe that's why Amsoil is making such a point of the other manufacturer's oil evaporating quicker, it's a known problem with synth's?
It seems to be the norm for many newer engines, Your oil comsumption dosent seem to be out of line........mine uses about 1 quart every 3000 or so. BTW iam using Mobil 5w20 since 200 miles. Great results from IOA. I will post it if you want
I definitely have to add oil now in between oil changes with Mobil 1. I do go longer between oil changes, but I don't go to extreme mileages like some say they do, I change at 5K with synth instead of 3K with dino. Although the Motorcraft I know is part dino. I have an Amsoil dealer on the way to my youngest child's school. I think I may try it, just for grins and see if there's any loss between changes. I don't buy any hype from any manufacturer, hey, that's what this forum is for, right ? To get the truth ? Take care amigo, Ken

The NOACK "volatility" of Amsoil is almost half that of Mobil 1 (4.86 for Amsoil, 8.92 for Mobil 1), so if evaporation is the issue, you should see almost a 2:1 difference in oil consumption going from Mobil 1 to Amsoil.
I would be VERY interested in the results of this !
I'll keep you abreast. I am getting close to oil change time and have been wanting to find out for myself if the Amsoil claims are true. I'll let ya know what the dealer tells me also, just for info's sake, Ken
Just got back from a 2000mi. trip into Ore., Calif. and Nev. I changed my oil to Mobil 1 just before the trip. Still shows full on the dip stick. With 66,500 on the odometer, I'm happy.
